How to Grow- Beans

Vegetable:

Beans

1. When – Plant in the spring. If you live in a climate with a mild winter, you can also plant in the fall.

2. Where – 8 hours of sun. Include a support structure/trellis for the beans to grow on. A fence also works well.

3. How – Plant each seed 1-2 inches into the soil, and 9-12 inches apart from each other. Water seeds regularly for the first few days to support the germination process. As the plants grow, make sure they are grabbing onto your supporting structure properly.

4. Harvesting – Harvest the beans when the pods are around 4-7 inches in length. The pods are more tender and less fibrous the smaller they are. Pods will mature regularly throughout the harvesting season, check plants at least weekly for ready to harvest pods.

5. Tips – Get creative with the support structure the beans are growing on! There are all types of trellises and bean poles to choose from. For a natural support structure, plant the beans near sunflower plants (not directly next to or they will compete for nutrients) and the beans will grow all the way up the sunflower plant.
