Beetroot
1. When – Plant in the early spring. If you live in a climate with a mild winter, you can also plant in the fall.
2. Where – 6 hours of sun. Avoid planting in full sun, as the beets can overheat. Partial shade works well.
3. How – Step 1- Work soil well, with a spade, about 8 inches down. Seed rows should be about 1 foot apart, and half an inch deep. Step 2- Once the plant reach 2 inches thin out the row. Then thin again when the plant reach 4 inches, there should be 2 inches between each plant. Fertilize after final thinning.
4. Harvesting – Once the root starts to show above the ground they are ready to harvest. Pull beets out by their tops. Ideal size for harvest is 1.5-2 inches in diameter.
5. Tips – Fertilize with 5-10-5. Succession plant beets in 6 week intervals, to better manage your harvest. The tops of beets are also edible.
