How to Grow – Blackberry

Vegetable:

Blackberry

1. When – Plant in the early spring. If you live in a climate with a mild winter you can also plant in the fall.

2. Where – 6-8 hours of full sun. A trellis for the plants to climb on is useful to assist with harvesting later on.

3. How -Dig a trench 2 feet wide and fill with compost prior to planting. Fill with compost and peat moss. Then dig a smaller trench about 3 inches deep and 6 inches wide to plant the raspberry canes. Plant each cane 18 inches apart. Cover the roots with soil.

4. Harvesting – Don’t harvest from the plant in the first year of growth as it can reduce the growth of the plant. In the second or third year wait for the fruit to get fully ripe before harvesting.

5. Tips – Fertilize with 10-10-10 every year a month before spring. The best trellis for blackberry is to stretch string or wire between 2 or more posts at 3ft from the ground and 5.5ft from the ground.
