Blueberry
1. When – Plant in the early to mid Spring, after your Spring frost date. Late April or early May is best.
2. Where – Area with full sun. Partial shade is doable however less blueberries will be produced.
3. How – Blueberry bushes should be planted around 3 feet apart from each other. Dig a hole twice the width of the root ball, and around 1 1/2 times deep the height of the root ball. Avoid planting near large trees that would shade out the bushes.
4. Harvesting – Once the blueberries turn blue and maybe slightly purple, they should be ready to eat. If the blueberries are ripe, a slight twist with your fingers should break them off the plant. Typically larger blueberries are sweeter, so don’t rush to pick the fruits if you think they are still growing larger.
5. Tips – Tips – Blueberry plants are unique in that they require acidic soil to grow. 10-10-10 fertilizer works well, and also there are many types of acidic specific fertilizer you can use.
