Vegetable:
Eggplant
1. When – Plant at the end of spring when night time temps reach 50 degrees. Cucumbers enjoy warm weather and cannot tolerate cold weather well. Plant seeds in May, or start seeds indoors in April.
2. Where – 6 hours of sun. Avoid areas where similar plants have grown in past years. Eggplants also love heat, so put them in a place where it will be nice and warm.
3. How – Plant seeds 1 inch into the surface of the soil, at least 1 foot apart. Make sure your eggplant gets plenty of water while they are young. Wait for outside temperatures to reach 70 degrees before planting.
4. Harvesting – Eggplants should be harvested when they are firm and shiny, although the eggplant should not be allowed to grow to its full size. If grown to the full size the eggplant can be tough and fibrous.
5. Tips – Fertilize with 5-10-5 when first planting. Avoid planting near tomatoes or peppers, as they are susceptible to similar diseases. Also, avoid planting eggplant in the same area each year as this will assist in avoiding diseases.
