How to Grow – Okra

Vegetable:

Okra

1. When – Okra is very susceptible to frost, wait until at least 2 to 3 weeks after the last Spring frost date before planting. For a fall crop, plant at least 3 months before the first Fall frost date.

2. Where – 6-8 hours of full sun at a minimum. Okra thrives on as much sun as possible, do not plant near trees or other large plants that may shade out the Okra.

3. How – Plant seeds 1/2 inch to 1 inch into the surface of the soil, 12-18 inches apart. You can speed up the germination process by soaking the seeds in tepid water overnight the night before planting.

4. Harvesting – Harvest Okra when the seed pods are 2-4 inches long. Okra pods grow quickly, check daily for okra during harvesting season. Once a seed pod reaches around 5 inches or longer, it will become too fibrous and inedible. Also, do not let the seed pods grow to maturity on the plant or the plant will stop producing additional seed pods. To harvest, cut slightly above the cap with a sharp knife.

5. Tips – Fertilize with 5-10-5 when first planting. Okra can be cooked in a variety of dishes including soups. Okra can be eaten raw, the smaller the seed pod the more tender and edible it will be. For a unique and beautiful looking plant, check out red okra.
