Rhubarb
1. When – Plant in the Spring or Fall when outside temperatures are still warm.
2. Where – plant is a place with full sun and room for the plant to grow and mature.
3. How – To start dig large holes about 2 ft deep and about 3 ft apart. Fill 6 inches of the hole with compost or manure. Then mix the remaining soil with compost and fertilizer. Fill the hole to the halfway point with the new soil mix, after this you can plant your crowns in the holes so that the top bud is about 3-4 inches from the top of the soil. Fill in the hole completely and tamp the roots. After the first signs of growth fertilize again, and add mulch.
4. Harvesting – In the second year of growth the rhubarb should be able to be harvested. Wait for the stalks to get about 18 inches long(or longer)before harvesting. To harvest. twist the stalk at the base of the plant. When harvesting, discard the leaves as they are mildly poisonous.
5. Tips – Fertilize with 10-10-10. After many years of growth the rhubarb can get crowded, but you can dig up and divide the plants, for other places in your garden or for a friend.
