How to Grow – Tomatoes

Vegetable:

Tomatoes

1. When – Tomatoes are very susceptible to cold. Wait until nighttime temperatures are consistently above 50. Usually around mid to later in Spring.

2. Where – Tomatoes thrive in 8 hours of sunlight per day. They need a minimum of 6 hours a day to produce fruit. Take note of which tomato variety you buy, some will only grow into a small bush, however others can grow into large bushes well over 6 feet tall, shading out your other plants.

3. How – There are usually many tomato plants already grown offered at your local plant stores. This will be your easiest option if you are new to growing tomatoes. Otherwise if growing from seed, it is recommended to start them inside a few weeks before your first frost date if possible. Plant seeds 1/2 into soil, leaving at least 12 inches apart when planted in your yard.

4. Harvesting – The first step to harvesting is knowing your variety and what the specific type of tomato should look like when it’s fully grown. Avoid pulling on fruit to pick it as it can damage the stems. Use pruners or twist the fruit to pop it off the plant.

5. Tips – Tomatoes are a staple to many gardens and there are countless varieties. Some varieties do better for making sauces out of, so depending on your want, be sure to do some research to see which type fits your needs. Cherry tomatoes specifically are loved because of their small size making them an easy and convenient snack while in the garden.
